AI visibility for SaaS: getting ChatGPT to recommend your product

Software buying always started with a question: "what tool should I use for this?". For years that question went to Google, a forum or a colleague. Today, more and more, it goes straight to ChatGPT. And the model answers with two or three products. If your SaaS isn't one of them, you've lost the lead before they knew you existed.

For a SaaS product, where acquisition cost is high and the decision is considered, being left off that shortlist isn't a detail: it's losing the earliest and cheapest part of the funnel.

How people evaluate software now

The classic journey —search, read comparisons, trial, decide— still exists, but now it has a new filter at the start. Before reading anything, many people ask AI to narrow the options: "give me the best tools for X", "alternatives to such a product", "what's right for a team this size". The model makes the first cut.

That first cut is decisive because it defines which products even get considered. You can have the best tool in your category, but if AI doesn't include you in the initial list, you compete at a disadvantage before you even start.

Why AI may ignore a good product

The model doesn't trial your software or read your landing to decide whether to recommend you. It builds its answer from what it learned about your category: directory reviews, comparisons, Reddit and technical-community threads, articles that list tools. An excellent but rarely mentioned SaaS is, to the model, a stranger.

That's why young or highly technical products sometimes don't appear even though they solve the problem well: they lack presence in the sources AI reads, not quality. And that can be diagnosed and worked on, but first it has to be measured.

Inspeccia asks ChatGPT the evaluation questions for your category and shows you whether your product appears, how it describes it and which alternatives it compares it against. It's the picture of your place in the shortlist AI builds.

What you can do about it

First, measure where you stand: whether AI names you, how it describes you and against whom. Then the work is about presence: appearing in your category's comparisons, taking care of reviews on the directories that matter, participating genuinely in the communities where your customer researches. It's the same principle as word of mouth, but now part of that word of mouth is mediated by a model.

And, as with any site, make sure the technical side doesn't leave you out: if your landing or docs depend on JavaScript to show content, many AI crawlers don't see it. We cover that in the technical AISO guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why does AI visibility matter for a SaaS?

Because software buying starts with research, and that research partly migrated to AI assistants. The question "what tool should I use for this?" now goes to ChatGPT as much as to Google. If the model recommends three products and yours isn't there, you lose the lead before they even know you exist.

Isn't being on G2 or Capterra enough?

It helps, but it's not enough. Review directories are one of the sources AI reads, not the only one. The model combines reviews, articles, comparisons, community threads and brand mentions to build its recommendation. Doing well in a directory is necessary; understanding the whole is what moves the needle.

Does this help a new SaaS with no traction?

Especially. For a young product, the first thing is to know whether AI already knows it or ignores it entirely, and against which references it compares it. That diagnosis guides where to invest: if you're still invisible, the work of presence and mentions is the priority above anything else.

How do I measure it?

Inspeccia asks ChatGPT the typical evaluation questions for your category —"best tool for X", "alternatives to Y"— and shows you whether you appear, how it describes you and which competitors it places you against. It's the picture of your place in the software buying decision.

Is your SaaS on AI's shortlist?

In every analysis we ask ChatGPT the evaluation questions for your category and report whether you appear, how it describes you and which alternatives it compares you against. The first step to stop losing leads before the first click.
